My name is Steve and I live in Christchurch with my partner and 2 young children. We immigrated to New Zealand from England 3 years ago and have settled into the Kiwi lifestyle. We love Christchurch and feel very lucky to be raising our family here.
I am a Joiner/Carpenter by trade and I am very proud to part of the rebuild. I was
given the opportunity to produce the Spire for the Art’s Centre on Worchester Street,
as the building was being rebuilt after the earthquakes. The spire is the decorative
jewel of the building and I feel privileged to have been able to make and restore such a beautiful feature for Christchurch.
I found a love for carving earlier last year and have enjoyed creating different pieces,
with a favourite in particular for animal carvings. I work free hand from my own ideas
and a quick basic sketch before I start. Sourcing logs is sometimes quite tricky but
adds to the experience and its good fun to choose the right log for each carving. I love creating using different tools and techniques, which add all the textures and fine
details for each project. I have been experimenting with the blow torch for different
effects and love this technique to make certain aspects of each carving stand out.
Every project needs different care and attention to ensure the carving is finished to
the highest standard. I put heart and soul into each one. I can’t wait to see how every project turns out and how each animal comes to life.
